Project Overview
Pinehurst Country Club is one of the most prestigious golf facilities in the United States and the host of the 124th U.S. Open, held June 13–16, 2024. Preparing for an event of that scale requires extensive temporary infrastructure, including large spectator support areas and what the club referred to as “tent city.”
To make room for event operations, Pinehurst needed to temporarily dismantle its existing driving range netting system, install safety barrier netting to protect workers during event construction and teardown, and build an entirely separate temporary championship warm-up range for competitors during tournament week. Once the U.S. Open concluded, Pinehurst required a seamless return to normal operations, including reinstalling the original netting system in its original location, without delays or safety issues.
Challenge
This wasn’t a typical netting installation: it was a high-stakes, deadline-driven, multi-stage logistics project tied to one of golf’s premier global events.
Pinehurst needed Nets of Texas to manage four major stages:
STAGE 1:
Remove and store the original driving range netting system.
STAGE 2:
Construct a safe, professional “championship range” for players during the event.
STAGE 3:
Install temporary netting to protect workers during event buildout and teardown.
STAGE 4:
Tear down all temporary systems and restore the facility to its original site condition
The biggest challenges included:
- Scheduling and execution across four separate on-site stages
- Coordinating logistics with facility management and the USGA
- Safely dismantling and storing reusable netting and poles without damage
- Ensuring uninterrupted protection for workers and spectators
- Hitting immovable deadlines tied to tournament week
The margin for error was zero. The systems needed to be installed on time, perform flawlessly, and be removed cleanly and efficiently.
Solution
Nets of Texas delivered a phased, start-to-finish solution designed specifically around Pinehurst’s tournament timeline and site constraints. All netting used for this project was #18 Nylon Netting with a 1” mesh square, providing consistent performance across each stage.
Nets of Texas dismantled and stored the original range netting and poles, then installed a 30’ tall x 300’ long temporary hitting net to protect workers building the U.S. Open infrastructure.
Once construction progressed, the temporary hitting net was dismantled and stored. Nets of Texas then installed a 50’ tall x 800’ long championship range, giving competitors a safe, professional warm-up area during tournament week.
STAGE 3: Worker Protection During Teardown
Immediately following the tournament, the championship range was dismantled, and the temporary hitting net was reinstalled to protect workers dismantling the event facilities.
After all event infrastructure was removed and turf had time to recover, Nets of Texas returned to reinstall the original driving range poles and netting system —approximately 1,650 linear feet — restoring the facility to its pre-event condition.
Throughout the project, Nets of Texas coordinated directly with the facility manager and USGA representative, managing timing, storage, and staging logistics.
To maximize efficiency, much of the material was stored on-site or nearby in North Carolina, avoiding unnecessary transport and ensuring rapid deployment between stages.
Results
The Pinehurst project showcases Nets of Texas’s ability to perform under pressure, delivering complex, multi-stage netting solutions on a national stage, without missing deadlines.
Flawless Safety Performance
During construction, tournament week, and teardown, the temporary systems performed exactly as intended. There were no reported incidents of balls escaping the barrier nets and causing injury or property damage, reducing liability exposure and protecting both workers and spectators.
Deadlines Met — Every Time
Nets of Texas Result:
Across four separate stages spanning multiple months, Nets of Texas hit every critical milestone. Pinehurst was highly satisfied not only with the finished systems but especially with the team’s working efficiency and ability to deliver on schedule for a premier PGA/USGA event.
This project also enhanced the overall fan experience by enabling the construction of a “tent city” within the original range area, creating space for the infrastructure needed to host a world-class tournament.
A Proven Long-Term Partner
Nets of Texas Result:
Pinehurst chose Nets of Texas based on a prior successful project completed approximately five years earlier. That existing relationship helped secure this contract, and following the U.S. Open project, Pinehurst has already engaged Nets of Texas again for additional work at Pinehurst #7.
In their own words
“Nets of Texas provides by far the best netting for a facility that I have seen in my 42 years of coaching. They are extremely durable and perform exactly as intended, effectively stopping balls on impact. Our entire facility, including our batting cages, is outfitted with Nets of Texas products, and we couldn’t be happier. They are a trusted partner for all sports facilities across Texas.”

Project Overview
BlackHorse Golf Club is a well-established golf country club in Cypress, Texas, featuring a high-use driving range. Nets of Texas originally partnered with
BlackHorse during the course’s initial opening in 2000, installing a custom golf netting system designed to protect surrounding areas from errant golf balls.
Challenge
The primary challenge was extending the existing driving range netting to address new safety risks created by nearby development. The original poles could not simply be extended taller, requiring selective removal and replacement while keeping the facility operational.
Additional challenges included:
Complex Design Needs:
Designing netting tall enough to intercept golf balls at the peak of their flight trajectory.
Points of Access:
Working within tight access areas behind the range.
Safeguarding Turf:
Protecting the driving range turf while operating heavy equipment.
Efficiency & Delivery:
Completing the work quickly to avoid downtime during late spring and early summer, the club’s busiest season.
Durability & Aesthetics:
The solution needed to be durable, discreet, and engineered to handle high-velocity golf balls while preserving the professional appearance of the facility.
Solution
Nets of Texas designed a custom extension to the existing netting system, maintaining the same 500 linear feet of coverage while ncreasing height where needed. The new system tapers from 60 feet at the lowest points to 100 feet at the highest, based on golf ball flight trajectory research indicating that balls
reach peak height between 150 and 350 feet downrange.
Key elements of the solution included:
Custom-engineered steel poles, all painted black to match the existing system.
Engineer-stamped drawings provided prior to installation.
Net height designed specifically to intercept balls at peak trajectory.
Careful removal and replacement of existing poles that could not be extended.
Installation was completed over two site visits: two days for pole removal and installation, and one day for net installation. Overall, the entire system was completed and fully operational within one month of initial inquiry.
Results
The BlackHorse Golf Club project highlights what Nets of Texas does best: building long-term partnerships, delivering custom-engineered solutions, and executing projects with exceptional speed and efficiency.
The extended netting system significantly reduced the number of golf balls leaving the driving range, dramatically lowering the risk of property damage and liability for nearby businesses and vehicles.
Key outcomes included:
Safety
Improved safety coverage aligned with real-world ball flight physics.
Liability
Nets of Texas Result:
Reduced liability exposure for the golf club.
Property
Nets of Texas Result:
Enhanced peace of mind for neighboring businesses and visitors.
Aesthetics
Nets of Texas Result:
Positive feedback on the professional appearance of the netting system.
Relationships
Nets of Texas Result:
Strengthened relationships with surrounding property owners.
BlackHorse Golf Club has since used the site as a showcase for prospective Nets of Texas clients, reinforcing the long-term value of the solution and partnership.
